Well Setheads, the final M-set show has come and gone and I'm both excited for the future and admittedly sad that an era that has been such a HUGE part of my life is coming to an end. In a bizarre twist of fate, we played our final show at El Corazon - the same club where I played my FIRST show in Seattle. The evening was a blast. A nice crowd cheered us on, we played our hearts out and when we hit the last note, I really felt the immensity of the moment. This was going to be the last seconds of my persuit of music as a career.

I was pleased to see SOOOO many friends that we haven't seen in a while. I'd like to mention each of you by name, but I'm afraid I will forget some and don't want to underscore how much each and every one of you is appreciated in my memory. Many of you were buying me rounds and my God I didn't duck from a single one of them. Of course, I'm paying for it today. It was worth it.

Though this impending end has made me actually very sad these past weeks, I have to admit that I am very excited to put music into the "purely for the love" file of my life. It's not easy to take your strongest passion in life and try to turn it into a business. For a while I think it effected my love for it. That love has returned. For me, it is more than welcome.

Please keep your eyes on the site for a while, Chris has posted some new stuff and I will be sending an update from up north in a week or two. Also, I may digitize one of my weather segments and post it on the site as well...just so you can see me in action. For the record, you can visit the website of my new job at www.KTUU.com. Also, I am hoping that Chris and Eugene will keep y'all posted as to what projects they are getting involved with and please, please, please support them. They are my dearest friends and I will miss them deeply.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your support and friendship these past years. I don't regret a single momment and am proud to say that I shared my life with such a wonderful group of people. Best of blessing to all of you.

Howdy Ho Setheads!! It is with great excitement, yet a heavy heart that I pass on what will be one of the final news updates on the goings-on with M-set. After over 7 years together, I have decided to move on to a new path in life and have accepted a job as the new weather anchor at KTUU in Anchorage, Alaska. Many of you know that I have been working behind the scenes at KOMO news as a weather producer, this opportunity will finally put me in front of the camera and is so good that I couldn't turn it down.

SO LISTEN UP!! I have one last GIANT favor to ask. M-set's final farewell show will be Wednesday, Nov. 2nd at El Corazon (formerly The Offramp). It is all-ages, and it is early in the evening. It will also be serving as my going away party, as I will be leaving for Anchorage that following weekend. Nothing would mean more to me than to see as many smiling faces in the audience as possible. This club is ironically the site of my first ever show in Seattle and I'm super excited to be hitting this stage as my farewell as well.

In the mean time, go to our FORUM and share with me your fondest M-set memories. I'd love to hear them. I am truly grateful for all of your support over these years and feel honored to have shared the stage for over 7 years with Chris and Eugene. They truly are two of the finest men I have ever met. Thanks, my friends. Now....

LET'S PARTY!!!!

Howdy Ho Setheads!! This past weekend we had the bittersweet fortune of playing our friends Aaron and Tracy’s wedding. They rented a ranch just outside of Cle Elum and threw one hell of a party. But first things first. Why bittersweet? As we were packing up and heading out of town, we noticed that the exhaust leak that Chris and Jamie had worked so hard to repair, was still active. Translation: carbon monoxide was leaking into the cabin of the van at an alarming rate.

Now we all know that your boyz of M-set aren’t overly bright. Otherwise why would we be musicians? Think about it. So we decided to go ahead despite the invisible poisonous gas that was bombarding us. Well, four headaches, a couple dizzy spells and an upset stomach later, we realized that we had a real problem on our hands. We were all feeling the effects of a slow death creeping up on us, but we only had about a 100 mile trip. So we sucked it up (literally) and drove our sick asses to the wedding site. Gratefully pouring out of the van for fresh air, upon arrival.

The wedding itself was held in a pasture up on a hill with a great view on all sides. We performed "500 miles" as the groom entered, and "What A Wonderfrul World" as the brides song. It was quite lovely. The ceremony was beautiful, short and sweet and we wrapped it up with Chris singing "That’s Amore" like only he can. Off to the reception!

In a nutshell, the reception included amazing barbque, tasty humus, beautiful bridesmaids, champagne and several sets from the boyz of M-set. The Islander Pale Ale was a close friend of mine and it enabled me to completely chowder several of the songs we played. But it didn’t really matter because everyone else had been ponying up to the fire water wagon since before the wedding. Somewhere around 3 a.m. we all ended up at the hot tub up on the hill, singing songs for the wedding party guests that were soaking in it. I took the opportunity to wander the woods with a couple of hounds and enjoy the great outdoors under a full moonlight.

A cold night’s sleep and some great post-party hangover breakfast later, we packed up the van and headed out. Well, remember what we dealt with on the way over? Yes, it was still there. As bad as ever. None of us could imagine going through the same crap again, so thanks to Eugene’s ingenuity, we rigged the van with 4 sections of garden hose . . . two taped to the outside on the passenger side, and two taped to the outside of the driver’s side, all of which then lead into the van and one of each into our mouths. Kind of like a big, dumb snorkel. Here’s a pic of just how ridiculous we were -->

But I have to say that it made the ride home less "near death" than the ride over. We actually got to breathe fresh air. We looked like complete idiots with sections of hoses coming out of our mouths, but at least we didn’t have blinding headaches and puke flying out of our mouths.

Hey, our friend (and fellow Sethead) John Nelson is finally on the mend after a literal bout with the grim reaper. You’ve heard John on KMTT and likely seen him sing "Just What I Needed" at several of our shows. He has some pretty hefty hospital expenses, so we are going to perform at a benefit show for his, well, benefit. Check out the "Shows" portion of the website for more info, but keep in mind IT’S NEXT WEEK!!! It’s our only local show for a while, so please come on out and support us, and our good friend John.

Yo Setheads!

Your boys from M-set hit the gig train once again after my unfortunate accident. I accidentally had to go up to Alaska and can salmon for a month. It sucked. But hey, I can afford Bud Light instead of Keystone Light now! Woo hoo!

We played Friday night at The Northwest Passage in Aberdeen. It's a place where you can always count on a warm reception. The bands we played with kicked ass. It was the kind of show that you rarely see in Seattle. Where all of the bands are a bit different than each other...and all are good.

Aberdeen is a fun place for me. The club is kinda dark, kind of different, and the beer is actually priced the way beer should be priced at a bar. So I feel obligated to get several. My bud Carrie showed up with new bud Daren and we had a kick ass time. The highlight of the night, though, was going across the street to another bar and seeing a 5'8", 300 + pound guy sing "Balls To The Wall" (by Accept) on the karaoke machine. For a moment, I felt as though I was in the Twilight Zone. But a drunken, new M-set fan who had seen us play earlier, brought me back to reality. "Dude, you guys fucking ROCK!"

We headed back to the hotel and heisted a few beers back up to the room. I wasn't sleepy, so I was ready to have a couple. I think I ended up finishing one, and falling asleep. Am I getting old? Yeah right. We all woke up the next day in a bit of a haze. Eug and I got up way before everyone else and went on a run about. Jokes about Kurt Cobain were plentiful. We all drooled over the MILFs in the lobby, ate Cocoa Krispies and headed back to Seattle.

Monday night we played an acoustic show at Tost. Many people who have seen us play acoustically recently have told me that in many ways, we sound even better acoustically because you can really appreciate the harmonies. I know I can. I enjoy the acoustic thing. It's laid back. It makes me feel like a hippie. Though I doubt there are many hippies that drink scotch and soda and sing about lying to girls. Many thanks to the many friends that came and supported us that night.

So listen up....WE PLAY ON THE 19TH. If you are on the fence about coming out...fuck you. Get the fuck out! Te he he. Get it? GTFO? God, I'm a dork. Yes, we play at The High Dive on August 19th and we need bodies. We may even put together a little post party if we get enough preliminary interest. Shoot me an email and let me know your coming! (oh god, oh god, I'm coming!)

Finally, our friend and frequenter of M-set shows, John Nelson is in Instensive Care right now. He had a series of complications and it's been fairly touch and go. We wish him a speedy recovery and would love for you all to send some positive vibes his way. He is a very good friend of M-set, both as a band, and to each of us individually. Look for a benefit show in his honor, soon. Get well, buddy.

Well, Setheads, the Memorial Day weekend is over and have we all recovered yet? I feel like I passed a kidney stone...through my LIVER. Wow. We played a benefit show at Neumos on Sunday and the person who put it together was kind enough to donate some fine beers to the M-set cause. So I've been drowning in Mirror Pond and Pilsner Urguel for the past few days. Is this heaven?

The show at Neumos was kick ass. If you haven't seen the M-set "BADD Girl Dancers", you must come out. But guys, wear a pair of pants that are a size too big, because when you see them in their sexy outfits, you'll run out of room in the crotch area. They grace the stage on several songs and help out in the cue card department. They also help out in the "I'm definiltey not gay" department.

Our set was fun as hell. Big stage, big sound. It was one of my favorite stages that we've played on. But I have to say that the highlight of the night for me was seeing the band before us called "Royal Bliss" from Salt Lake City. Keep your eyes and ears on these guys. They are kick ass. We'll see them again in late August, so keep your calendars open.

If you haven't seen M-set for a while, now is the time to come back out. The show has transformed quite a bit with the addition of Andrew and the dancers. Why don't ya join us some time, eh? (oh man, now I'm sounding like a Canadian).

I'm heading up to the great state of Alaska for about a month-- My "Going Away" show will be June 25th in Magnolia at the Village Pub - come on out! There's salmon that are begging for me to cut their heads off, gut them, stick them in a can, and then pressure cook them for several hours, and I need to answer the call. See y'all when I get back!!

05-16-05

Well Hello Setheads! It's been 48 hours since the show and I'm STILL recovering. Not only from the power packed 3 band bill we had at The High Dive on Saturday, but from the Post Party as well.

Jason (XM-set) and his band came up early from Portland to our house, so we all had a chance to hang out and exchange recipes and knitting ideas. We herded both bands down to The High Dive (which is one of the coolest clubs in town, I must say) and prepared for a night of legend.

Gary Reynolds & The Brides of Obscurity played the first set and showed that they should not remain in obsurity any longer. It wasn't the first time I've seen Gary, but I gotta tell you, you never get tired of that Mo-Fo. His players all were top notch. It was aweseome. Every time I heard him fire up his electric piano, I wanted to shout "Play some Supertramp!" - but decided against it.

Next came your boys of M-set. We debuted the "Bad Girl" dancers that night. They came out and did a wonderful routine for "I Lie To Girls" dressed in little school girl outfits. I was purring under my breath, I must say. They had several other appearences throughout the show that made for stunning visuals and you will for sure see more of them at future shows. By the end of the show I was so out of breath that I barely had enough strength to finish my Scotch. Wow.

"The Strain" featuring Jason Demain and Craig Montoya (from Everclear) closed the show and I thought they did awesome. We've been encouraging Jason to start his own band for years, rather than being a side guy, and I'm SO glad that finally happened. It's a good fit for him. The show closed with a reunion of Jason and the boys of M-set playing "Just What I Needed". Schweet.

Afterwards we all went back to the Casa De M-set for another of our infamous Post Parties. This one may have topped them all. Our deck was so packed with people that we had to ask them to clear off in case of collapse. There were jam sessions, squished rats (email me if you don't know what that is), Jamie and Chris confessed their love for one another by having Jamie walk into a bentover and naked Chris. I'm glad I missed that. I finally fell asleep with "9 a.m." displaying on my clock. Whew...what a night. Shall we do it again?

PLEASE COME OUT to our show at Neumos on the 29th. It is a benefit for a kid who got in a severe accident and has no insurance. I really sympathize with this kid. His bills are mounting out of control and anything we can do to help would be appreciated. I truly hope to see you there.

A new show has been added to the growing roster of gigs, folks, and this one is an important show. On May 29th, the Set of M play a benefit show with Royal Bliss from Utah and Dope Smoothie at Neumos in Capital Hill. The doors are at 8 pm, and the show at 9:30 pm.

This is a benefit show for Daniel Johnson, who got in a very serious skateboarding accident and barely survived. This show is to help pay for his medical costs and what looks to be a very long recovery. Show your support for the band and for a guy who needs our help.

Hot off the digital presses of Buzz Studios comes the latest musical installment for the BJ Shea show, Ron Mexico, provided by the Set themselves. Listen and love it!

Greetings Setheads - it's been a busy month in M-setland. On Easter, we performed an "Easter According To The Beatles" at a chuch in North Bend. We were hired to bust out 5 Beatles songs and actually had quite a good time. We had a great turn our for our acoustic gig at ToST in Fremont last Monday. Fremont is really turning into quite the hot spot.

SPEAKING OF WHICH, our next show is on month away at The High Dive. It's going to be a biggie - in fact, old friend and former M-setter Jason Demain will be opening the show with his new band. Rumor has it that the former bass player from Everclear is in the line up now. Come on down!

Well, it's been about three days or so since the show at the High Dive (formerly Suite G) and I'm finally feeling back to normal... oh, so much beer...

Anyway, we have a bunch of new pictures added to the site, thanks to this show, so go check t hem out. Also, the boys have lined themselves up an acoustic gig at ToST, also in Fremont (next to the Nectar, according to the address...), on a Monday night, the 11th of April. Details on the shows page.

Wow. The Nectar Lounge. One hell of a cool venue, and one hell of a good show went on there last thursday. The place still has that "new car smell" and the stage and layout of the club is very sleek and open.

The guys had a great show with a great turnout, and we've got the pictures to prove it.

We also have a new PDF flyer available for their next show at the High Dive (formerly Suite G). It's a a big file, kids, over 5 megs, so be warned.

Just a quick news blurb:

1 - Some new pics from a couple of recent shows have been added to the Pictures page.

2 - A new PDF flyer for the Nectar Lounge show is available for download. Snag it, print it, and hang it around town!

Enjoy, kids!

Greetings and salutations, Set-Heads! I've got a bunch of news here about everyone's favorite band...

The guys are playing their next show this upcoming weekend (Saturday, the 5th of February) at the Mars Bar with Nigel Mustafa Memorial Quartet. The show starts as 9pm, and there's a only a 5 buck cover charge. This should be a hell of a good show, so make sure you're there early to get a good spot. Over to the left is the PDF file of the latest poster...

(Speaking of upcoming shows, ther show at Big Daddy's slated for the 11th of March has been cancelled, so mark that off your calendar...)

In other news... the band has been real busy working on some new songs. Over on the Music page, there are two brand-new demos for your hearing pleasure: She's The girl and Automatic.

The guys also have a spot on Myspace that is really cool, showcasing their music. Anyone familar with MySpace will let you know that it's a hell of a cool place. Don't be left out; go take a look!

Oh, and finally, the new CD is finally available in some local record stores: Sonic Boom (in Ballard, Fremont, & Capital Hill), Tower Records (Downtown Seattle & U-district), Cellophane Square (in the U-district), Easy Street (Downtown).

-Brian M.

01-05-05

It's a brand new year, Setheads, so get ready to rrrruuummmble!!!

2004 ended with a bang, as the band played one final gig for the year at EMP's Liquid Lounge, where they kicked the usual amount of ass, plus a shin or two. The place was packed, and the guys had a great time. You can bet they'll be playing there again...

As for 2005, the gang is starting this year right, with several new gigs (check the shows page!) lined up, and more on the way. You can catch them in a couple of weeks (Friday the 14th) at a cool club/bar in Fremont called Suite G, were they will be playing with Central Services. The guys go on at around 10:30 that night, so make sure you're there early enough to get a good spot. Then, on the very next night (Saturday the 15th), the band heads back over to Woodinville to play another one of their all-night sets at Big Daddy's, who just can't seem to get enough of these fractal bastards!

Looking a little bit into the future, The Set of M has a gig at another cool Fremont place called the Nectar Lounge (in the middle of February), where they'll be part of a huge line-up. There's a special bonus for this show, kids! The guys at the Nectar were cool enough to give Chris a bunch of free promo tickets to the show, and he's giving them away to anyone who asks. Want to get in free? Just email chris and he'll hook you up!

I should have another gig poster ready for download in a few days for the Suite G show, so check back soon!

-Brian M.
